New Delhi –To broaden its horizon, Dr Kashinath Samagandi, Director, MDNIY signed an MoU with Brig. Dr. Bibhu Kalyan Nayak, Director-Head, NCSSR- Sports Authority of India (SAI). This collaboration aims to combine expertise from both institutions to advance sports medicine, injury rehabilitation, and performance enhancement through Yoga practices.
The MoU between MDNIY and SAI is set to pave the way for collaborative research and development in areas such as injury prevention, rehabilitation, and performance optimization. MDNIY’s expertise in Yoga, coupled with NCSSR’s specialization in Sports Medicine, will foster innovative approaches to training athletes and improving performances through holistic methods.
The signing of the MoU took place during the inauguration of a six-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) program for Yoga Therapists and Instructors at MDNIY. The CME, scheduled from Sep 9 to 14, 2024, is having participants from all over India deep diving into the therapeutic applications of Yoga, with the integration of modern medical approaches. This program provides a comprehensive understanding of how traditional Yoga practices can be scientifically applied to therapeutic contexts, benefiting both Yoga instructors and therapists.
Dr. Nayak emphasized the significance of Yoga in enhancing the performance of Indian athletes, stating, “Yoga will undoubtedly benefit our athletes. Our focus will be on developing customized approaches to identify which specific Yogasanas will be most beneficial for each athlete. Through comprehensive studies, we will establish a baseline to assess the physiological, mental strength, and flexibility parameters, ensuring a targeted and effective integration of Yoga into athletic training.”
Dr. Nayak also highlighted the synergy between Yoga and Sports Science, particularly in enhancing athletic performance and rehabilitating sports injuries. He emphasized that Yoga, when integrated with modern medical practices, offers significant potential in improving physical endurance, mental focus, and overall well-being, which are crucial for athletes.
Dr. Kashinath Samagandi, Director, MDNIY, in his presidential address said, “Over the past decade, since PM Shri Narendra Modi announced the International Day of Yoga, we have successfully familiarized millions with the practice of Yoga. However, integrating Yoga as a part of everyday life remains a crucial step. Yoga instructors and therapists now bear the significant responsibility of taking this ancient science to every individual, making it a formal and essential element of a healthy lifestyle. Their dedication will shape the future of well-being worldwide.”
While thrusting upon the initiatives of various ministries Dr.Samagandi said, “We are fortunate that various ministries are coming together to globally promote Yoga, including the Ministry of Sports and Ministry of Home Affairs. Every year, over 100 jawans from CAPF, CRPF, and SSB are trained as master trainers under the Ministry of Home Affairs and spread their knowledge across their respective areas. The signing of the MoU between MDNIY and SAI marks a significant step towards integrating Yoga into the lives of sportspersons. This convergence will enhance athletic performance and overall well-being. Together, we can achieve extraordinary outcomes through the formal adoption of Yoga in sports.”
